Home Maintenance Tasks You Should Know How to Do

There are, ultimately, two essential reasons why you should regularly carry out home maintenance. For one thing, you need to preserve your home’s livability; for another, your house could plummet in value if it degrades too much. Home maintenance is essential for both living in a home and for finding someone willing to buy it from you.

However, when we mention home maintenance, we often think about getting in the plumber, the roofer, and so on. Sometimes, home maintenance tasks do indeed require the expertise of these professionals but, for most of the tasks involved in keeping your home looking its best, you should know how to do it yourself.

Utah realtor estate brokerage CityHome Collective say that when you first buy a house, it will have a certain value, but that market will then change this over time. Given that there is typically a very long time between purchasing a house selling it, this means that the value can fluctuate considerably. If your home’s value decreases between buying and selling, it can therefore be pretty difficult to know how much of this is down to market fluctuations and how much is down to the degradation of the home over that time. Nevertheless, there’s one simple away around this problem – don’t let your home degrade.

The Importance of Doing it Yourself

As mentioned, you cannot do everything yourself, and you will need to get in the pros for the more complicated tasks that take tools and skills the average homeowner will not have. You will be surprised how much home maintenance you can manage yourself though.

As mentioned, the primary importance of this is keeping the costs down, but that isn’t only because you will not be paying for professional help all the time. It is also because regular maintenance will stop things degrading to the point where you need professional help at all. Regular maintenance can hold off the need to get in the roofer, electrician, and so on.

Home Maintenance Tasks You Can Do Yourself

There isn’t space here to outline every task within home maintenance you can manage yourself. But here are a few to get you started:

    Unclogging a Sink or Drain

Starting simple, all you need to manage this task is the ability to use a plunger. Beyond that, the old trick of hot water and bleach can help when the drain gets badly clogged.

Learn How to Shut of the Mains Water Supply

Shutting of the water mains is usually done by flicking a switch on the outside wall. This is simple enough, but you need to know where it is in an emergency. For an overflowing toilet though, there’s no need to shut off the water – simply turn the valve located behind the toilet itself.

    Re-Caulk

All caulk will eventually reach the point where it cannot be cleaned and needs to be replaced. Nevertheless, it’s worth deferring this day for as long as possible. When the time comes, remove the old caulk with a sharp tool and some oil and vinegar. Then tape the area and apply the new caulk with the caulking gun.

    Cleaning Gutters

This is classic fall-time home maintenance, and it’s wise to do this yearly and before winter. All you really need to do is get up there and scoop it out. However, if the debris are dry, a leaf blower can save a lot of time and effort.

Owning a home certainly comes with responsibilities to keep it in good shape, and those responsibilities are to your future self for when it comes time to put the home on the market.
